Evaluation Question 4 - Digital Technology

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Evaluation:
Prezi
During our evaluation we also used a variety of the tools below. I used my laptop's webcam to capture video and then recorded footage of my screen using a program called Camtasia. I edited these two together using after effects and uploaded to youtube so I could embed the video in this blog post. I also used a free tool called Prezi which allowed me to create an interactive presentation for one evaluation question. You can play around with different templates and add text as well as pictures and video footage to the presentation. I also used audacity to record my voice for a podcast which the audio I edited and in after effects and then uploaded to divshare.

Next for this evaluation question I am going to go over some of the new media technologies we used in our research and planning.

Blogger:
Blogger
The main website we used to log and update all our progress is blogger which is what i'm using to create this post right now. The site allows us to create posts about our research and planning including video deconstructions, updates on shoots as well as podcasts and vodcasts. There are a few features on blogger which make it ideal for logging out coursework progress. One of these is the feature of links lists down the side of the blog. These allow you to set up lists of types of posts such as podcasts or audience feedback.

  • When creating a post itself there are many formatting options within blogger allowing you to change the font and colour of your text which is useful for highlighting certain points or hyperlinks.
  • There is also function which allows you to upload pictures as well as video to make your posts more appealing. You can also add captions to these pictures which is especially useful when noting key points in video deconstructions.
  • RSS feeds where also used. I used a feed frog the Guardian music blog as well as the Daft Club forum for news on Daft punk.
  • I also added polls about music genre and peoples prefered Daft Punk songs. This helped with some preliminary audince feedback.
  •  I also added a group photo including our names to the side bar.

Youtube
Youtube:
Another site we used a lot in our coursework is YouTube. The site allows us to upload video to show to our audience which includes rough cuts, vodcasts and audience feedback. YouTube is good as you can easily embed the videos into blog posts using a code they give you.

  • The comments section allows anybody to leave feedback on the video which can be useful however sometimes inappropriate, another way to comment on the video is the rating system leaving a like or a dislike on the video.
  • There are also tools in the video manager which allow you to annotate your video pointing the audience to certain features of the video.
  • YouTube also allows you to subscribe to related channels or channels from other members in the group.
  • Another useful tool is the playlist function which you can ad rough cuts to or other videos which are related to each other.

Twitter and Facebook
Social Media:
Two more websites which where important for audience interaction as well as feedback where Facebook and twitter. We used Facebook for organizing shoots and getting people to act in our videos. We also used it for audience feedback on some of the rough cuts by posting our videos YouTube links in group chats and as status updates where people can comment on them. We posted the link to the people who acted in our shoots as well as we thought these people would be able to give better feedback having appeared in the video itself. We set up a twitter for Quack cuts as well in order to give updates on the shoots and the video as well as posting rough cuts. We also looked out for news on Daft punk as we followed their twitter page.
Facebook

Cameras:
New media technology wasn't just used in sharing our product but also in creating it. The HD cameras we used this year where a big step up from our AS work. These cameras have a much wider angle lens which allows for better video production. These cameras also worked well in low light conditions which was very useful for our video. In lots of scenes where shot in the dark such as the party sequence and performance footage. The cameras in general where very user friendly and gave good image quality.

High Definition
Standard Definition

The use of SD cards was practical as opposed to using tapes from last year. Another factor to take into account was uploading footage. Using Final Cut Pro X to upload then edit our footage was much easier than last year where we had to use multiple programs to process footage before it could be edited. In the research and planning we used the Cameras and final cut in making vodcasts as well as filming audience feedback.

Final Cut was also useful for uploading podcasts. We would use the Photo Booth program on Mac to record the podcast then import straight into final cut where it would give us the option to export the file as an mp3. For uploading and embedding this file we used Divshare. A free website which allows you to upload audio clips which we could then embed into posts on the blog. We also used Scribd in order to embed word documents or sheets to show evidence of our organisation and planning.

Tools In Production:
Photoshop CS6
During the production of the digipak and magazine ad design we used a few different programs on the mac in order to produce the final product. For my first digipak dummy and the suitcase design I used photoshop elements. I used a variety of tools such as opacity, emboss and clone stamp. Elements allowed me to move parts of the digipak around and position text in the right areas as well as placing stock pictures into the design. The software worked well for basic photoshop functions however isn't as good as the latest CS6 version of photoshop which we used at home when creating pictures for the viral campaign. Some tools where limited in the usage however it was good enough to produce the first drafts.

After Effects CS6
For the latest digipak design I used adobe after effects. Being used to the interface and function of the programs I could create the digipak much more quickly and easily. This program allowed me to use more effects and 3D work on the new design. The new idea involved a larger variety of fonts and used more images from our music video which was easier to do with the improved text tool functions in after effects. The program allowed more flexibility in the design with coordinates you I could accurately position text and images in the right position.

Final Cut:
Final Cut Pro - Group Video
When creating our rough cuts and eventually the final cut we used Final Cut Pro X. The program comes with a variety of feature which are useful for and much improved from the Final Cut Express we used last year. Once we had all the current footage edited into Final Cut Pro X we could find out what footage we still needed to get. When editing footage in this newer version of final cut we were able to manipulate the footage easily and apply a variety of effects to experiment with.

A big advantage of Final Cut Pro X is the lack of render times, this meant we could edit footage and playback in real time full in full screen. This allowed us to gain immediate feedback which we could then take into account when editing the video further. Due to the improved video quality the HD cameras gave us we could pan and zoom footage without losing too much of the quality. Render times when exporting a video in Final Cut Pro X where also much quicker. We could export and upload the video which we could then show to people to gain feedback on.

Rough Cut 7 - Audience Feedback

Rough Cut 9 - Audience Feedback

Daft Punk Final Cut Feedback (TC)

After screening our music video to a group of 25 male and female pupils aged 14 to 15 I gathered some responses and feedback and comments about the overall video and specific scenes/element.

  • 75% of a class would have been encouraged to buy track after watching the video
  • Different reading were to be expected but many of the group gave our preferred reading of, tickets being handed out for a gig or concert then showing the gig at the end.
We asked for some positive and negative point:

Positive: costume for the traveller was effective in setting him apart, The visual effects used really fitted the music video e.g the colour altering. Bike sequence was good the rewinding and jump cuts, not overusing the changing colour and effects. Layers, reflection shot, biker tricks was all good, tapping opening sequence and Live performance footage.Changing clothes was good but could have been improved if it were in another shop in charity shop.

Negative: Skateboard sequence didn't fit should have been filmed in a more open space, Bike sequence was confusing it was very fast.

Age appeal: Track choice was good, Skateboarding didn't fit or appeal to this age range, The SPFX were 'current' and appealed to us, the use of the car and public transport.

We asked about individual scene....

Charity shop scene 25 to 30% thought is was a good scene and fitted, a similare percentage were neutral in response and the remainder of the group disliked it.

Feedback From An Older Audience (TC)

"Classic piece of music to use and one which is sure to have a resurgence in popularity after their recent success."

"It was a good video, not quite as good as the original but very good nonetheless!
I liked the attempt and nod to the daft punk helmets and the variety of sort of story line that ran through it. Odd addition to go into Sue Ryder to collect some clothes but hey, it was pretty random and made me laugh. The fast paced pictures and action kept my interest to see what was coming up next and the mix of light, snow, 'nightclub' added different sides to the video. A great video all round I thought."

"I think it's really good and enjoyed it a lot. I wish I had the vocab or skills to comment on it!
I enjoyed the variety of transitions and effects and thought it was very interesting to watch and that the narrative held together but the details of the music and genre are beyond my ken.
I liked the hand beat and cuts at the beginning!"

"So impressed by the work and professionalism, can't even imagine the hours that have gone into it."

"My favourite part - tapping gloved hand or possibly Hitchcockian fade from wheel to wheel.
least favourite (and apparently everyone says this) - skater boy - looks clumsy and out of place with the style of the rest of the piece."

Digipak Effects Video

I thought this would give more information on the variety of effects and layers used in the production of the digipak in comparison to using screenshots.
